In her private practice Lynn has developed a particular expertise in applying yoga for athletes to enhance performance as well as adapting yoga for individuals with medical issue and health concerns. Her deep interest in the science and practice of integrative medicine — the discipline of blending modern science with the wisdom of ancient healing – has led Lynn to collaborate with medical doctors and alternative medical practitioners to bring body/mind solutions to her clients.
Lynn facilitates a multi-disciplinary treatment approach that helps transform the physical, emotional, and spiritual dimensions of people's lives. Her private yoga practice supports patients with Parkinson's Disease, scoliosis, and back injuries as well as those who are not ill but wish to increase self-awareness, enhance well-being, and prevent health-related challenges.
FOR ATHLETES
Running: Currently partnered with Fleet Feet, a local market boutique running store, Lynn has designed a program of yoga specifically for endurance athletics, runners and recreational walkers. In many cases, this is the first introduction to yoga these athletes have received.
The Yoga from the Heart/Fleet Feet partnership was built in part based on Lynn's reputation as well as the many articles that she's written for running websites and national magazines on specific yoga poses and solutions to help runners with their flexibility, mobility, tight backs, knees, tight hamstrings, and sore feet. This sports specific work with endurance and marathon runners has led to Lynn's unique development of yoga sequences to bring the body back into balance so that these athletes can continue to enjoy their sport for years to come.
Golf: Southwest Florida is known for its golf and it's not surprising that many of Lynn's private clients are golf enthusiasts interested in reducing their score and improving their handicap. Although each golfer is unique, many of the mechanical habits, body misalignments and mobility limitations remain the same.
Specifically, with golfers, the focus is on balance, flexibility and rotation with special attention to the hips, low back, and shoulders. The verbal instructions and physical yoga practice are similar to the golf swing, teaching players how to articulate a series of independent yet interrelated movements all at the same time. In the end, through yoga Lynn helps golfers improve body awareness, mobility and control making the game more successful.
Tennis: Lynn's first experience with teaching yoga to professional athletes came when Tommy Haus started private instruction to help loosen his tight hamstrings and improve his focus. Together they worked on preventing and remedying tennis-related injuries so that Tommy could stay healthy and competitive while touring.
Since that first introduction to competitive tennis and the issues associated with touring pros, Lynn has created several at home and on-the-road yoga programs for aspiring world champions and retired, active players like Jimmy Arias. All continue to report that yoga has improved their game, most notably their flexibility, power, balance and focus.
Rowers: What a challenge it was when the Tufts University women's crew program approached Lynn to design, develop and teach a yoga program specifically to address the body instability and imbalance created by the repetitive motion of rowing.
For two consecutive years, she worked with these collegiate athletes focusing on creating opposing body movements to bring back full range of motion and strength in the lower body, by opening the hips, strengthening and stretching the lower torso as well as the upper back, opening the chest, and loosening and elongating the shoulders and arms. Since that time she has offered several specialty workshops to local market rowers and has worked privately with several athletes from Sarasota Scullers and Sarasota Crew.
SPECIAL NEEDS: THE THERAPEUTIC BENEFITS OF YOGA
Neck and Back Pain: Lynn was involved in several rear-end car accidents that left her in pain and with limited mobility. Looking for solutions other then drugs, she turned to yoga to help with the recovery and healing of her injuries. Her commitment to a healthy lifestyle and her knowledge of yoga allowed Lynn to develop specific sequences to address her neck and back injures resulting in a pain free body and movement confidence.
For those people suffering with and burdened by neck and back pain, Lynn can share with you first-hand experiences and yogic solutions that will bring short-term relief and long-term recovery, ultimately creating a stronger and healthier back.
Parkinson's Disease and MS: More then five years ago, Lynn was introduced to Parkinson's Disease, its characteristics and debilitating effects when she started teaching the husband of one of her students. Working one-on-one she learned quickly how important physical activity, breath work and meditation are for individuals with Parkinson's.
Lynn has worked and taught folks with MS as well. She has witnessed first hand the therapeutic effects a regular yoga practice can have on the symptoms people experience from Parkinson's and MS. Her experience, but more importantly the experience and results her clients have, indicate that yoga postures and working with the breath release muscular tension, increase coordination and balance, increase flexibility and strength, help with fatigue, improve circulation and breathing, enhance alertness, and enable those with Parkinson's and MS to better manage stress.
Lynn has been invited by Sarasota Memorial Health Care System and the Neuro Challenge Foundation to speak at a series of symposiums for patients, caregivers, and healthcare providers about yoga and yoga therapy as an alternative modality that supports and enhances quality of life for those suffering with debilitating life challenges such as Parkinson's disease.
